| Content: | The Imagine Cup - an annual worldwide student competition covering different categories: programming algorithms, 3D graphics, artificial intelligence, and web applications. A student from the Higher Diploma in Software Engineering was chosen as the 2nd Runner for the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2004 Competition in Hong Kong. The selection panel included senior staff from Microsoft and Professors from universities in Hong Kong. The student (LAM Ping Ling) and advisor (Albert H S SCOTT) were cordially invited to the Imagine Cup award ceremony on Microsoft DevDays 2004, 19 May at the Grand Ballroom of Conrad Hong Kong Hotel. Anmar Alani Director, Developer & Platform Group, Microsoft Hong Kong presented the award. He commented on the highly innovative nature of the project and professional and confident manner in which the project was presented. The winning team and other runner-ups were all from Hong Kong universities. Tough competition indeed!!! The winning team received $120,000 and a trip to Brazil to compete in the World Championship of the Imagine Cup. A second runner-up place for a single student from IVE is a very notable achievement that highlights the creative abilities, innovativeness and high work ethics of IVE students. The title of the project is Pocket Profit Maker 2004.It is a business intelligent system, on a pocket PC, that enables a user to access data such as XML files or databases from Microsoft SQL Servers though a wireless local area network (LAN). The software enables a user to perform a full data analysis cycle using the software, i.e. the user can access data through web services, and then perform data mining and visualization. The software allows the user to import data, perform data cleansing, select data analysis tools and visualization. The user can therefore make more informed and better decisions by the hints or the calculated results provided by the software. The target users would most likely to be middle-level managerial staff that spends time away from their office visiting subsidiaries, partner organizations or clients. However, any member of staff who is away from their office would find the use of this software helpful in creating solutions to a variety of business situations. |
